2021.12.06 01:50 BlancheFromage Why philosophical naturalism (aka "rational thinking") will always win over magical thinking
Note: Traditionally within the Soka Gakkai and SGI, the Gohonzon has indeed been treated as sentient, as a deity, as the practitioner's "concierge" or personal portal to access the riches and opportunities of the Universe.
The faithful will piss and moan about this characterization, but it's only because they know it makes them look ridiculous. They actually do believe this - it's foundational to the SGI's belief structure:
Now on to philosophical naturalism: It isn't a matter of anti-supernatural bias
The idea that deities don’t affect the universe, then, is not an unjustified a priori assumption, as theologians often claim, but a conclusion born of experience: the experience that only a naturalistic attitude — -that is, a scientific one — has helped us understand nature and make verified predictions about it. As our confidence that science helps us understand the universe grows, so wanes our notion that immaterial and supernatural forces exist. When it comes to "actual proof", naturalism always wins out over magical thinking.
Beyond this incompatibility of methodology and outcomes is a philosophical incompatibility: the scientific view that supernatural beings aren’t just unnecessary to explain the universe (“methodological naturalism”), but can be taken as nonexistent (“philosophical naturalism”). Forrest (2000, p. 21) explains the link between these two forms of naturalism:
Taken together, the (1) proven success of methodological naturalism combined with (2) the massive body of knowledge gained by it, (3) the lack of a comparable method or epistemology for knowing the supernatural, and (4) the subsequent lack of any conclusive evidence for the existence of the supernatural, yield philosophical naturalism as the most methodologically and epistemologically defensible world view.
This is where philosophical naturalism wins — it is a substantive worldview built on the cumulative results of methodological naturalism, and there is nothing comparable to the latter in terms of providing epistemic support for a worldview. If knowledge is only as good as the method by which it is obtained, and a world view is only as good as its epistemological underpinning, then from both a methodological and an epistemological standpoint, philosophical naturalism is more justifiable than any other world view that one might conjoin with methodological naturalism.
...the ways in which people accommodate ancient superstition with modern reality makes me uncomfortable. This is exactly what SGI members do when they're trying to make a case that there's any purpose or reason to chanting.
Not that there’s anything wrong with accommodation, it’s just that the part of my life where I tried to salvage the good parts of [Ikedaism] in light of — well, in light of reality — is over. The mental gymnastics involved just weren’t worth the effort. It felt too much like keeping two sets of ledgers: one set of books with cooked numbers that add up to [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and SGI] and another set that actually make sense. The set of books with "cooked numbers" are, of course, the fiction novels The Human Revolution and The Neww Human Revolution, and an example from farther down the food chain, SGI:RV. They have to MAKE UP narratives in which they are amazingly successful and inexplicably triumphant, and it's ALL due to their mystical "practice"!! Because, obviously, it ain't happenin' in real life.
The question is whether we hold to those beliefs (which could be false) because of evidence and logic or because we are convinced they are required for salvation [enlightenment]. A distinctive feature of religious faith is the way we cling to beliefs despite all evidence to the contrary. If I “have faith” in my friend Frank to come pick me up at 5:00 PM, but he never shows up, my faith is shaken. I’m disappointed in Frank. On the other hand, if I “have faith” in [the Gohonzon] to answer prayer, but my wishes don’t come true, then surely “the Gohonzon works in mysterious ways.” My faith is not shaken. But it should be! Many, if not most, of us were recruited on the premise and promise that "You can chant for whatever you want!" If that was incomplete; if the full slogan included "...but you probably won't GET it", the SGI members recruiting us should have been HONEST up front. They all know they DON'T get what they chant for! We can see for OURSELVES!! SGI members are not living objectively better, more fulfilling lives than everybody else, and that shows that all their claims about their wondrous "practice" and "mentor" are FALSE. They're promoting falsehoods. They may well not be aware that what they're peddling is false and harmful (one of the requirements for defining something as "lying") but what they are promoting is still false and harmful. That they don't realize this is pitiable, perhaps, but certainly no reason NOT to point to the obvious FACT that their lives are NOT better than others', that their "actual proof" is actual proof of fail. SGI membership is, at best, worthless, and more often than not HARMFUL. The person who recommends drinking bleach to fix a COVID infection may really, truly believe that this is curative, but that won't stop this practice from harming anyone ignorant or gullible enough to do it.
[The person] who practices intellectual obedience, agreeing in principle to all the teaching of the [Ikeda cult], and accepting without examination every article he’s been taught; not discussing the meaning or the scope of his belief; thinking of himself within the [SGI organization] as a disciple who learns from it all he must think about all the great subjects of life, what he has to do to be a good man, what he must practice to be a [Bodhisattva of da ERF].Many of us here cite the SGI's poorly written, simplistic, and idiot-level texts as one of our biggest dissatisfactions with the SGI during our membership. We saw no purpose and certainly no benefit to creating an imaginary relationship with some distant, elderly Japanese businessman we'd never meet, who had no idea WE even existed. Who needs a one-way "relationship"? Isn't that more like celebrity stalking than being actually mentored? No one needs a BAD mentor!
This is a [person] whose all activity is regulated by an external authority, and who is not interested in thinking for [them]self, who would consider [them]self guilty of such temerity, who looks upon intellectual shyness as a virtue. [This kind of person] forbids [them]self to think of religious questions, for fear of thinking wrong; [they] take [their] religious instruction from the good books recommended by [their SGI leaders], and [they have] no other thoughts than those that are guaranteed very orthodox and very safe.
[There are not many who fit this mold,] for this model can be realized only at the cost of an abdication of nature, which many instinctively resist, and others consciously reject as a violation of their personality.” Source
By “see” I meant the broadly “to understand.” It is important, as you say, to try to feel what others feel.SCIENCE gives us a framework for investigating, collecting data, and ultimately understanding such phenomena. Hate-filled intolerant religions like the psueudo-Buddhist SGI will only puff up their membership that they're so innately SUPERIOR to everyone else and that everyone else is suitable only for DOMINATION.
When you hear somebody say, “Well, I don’t understand why she should be offended by that!” — it means they are imagining themselves in that situation. They aren’t trying to feel what it’s like to be the other person.
It’s the same thing when you hear people wonder aloud why people don’t “pick themselves up by their bootstraps.” Well, that’s because they aren’t you. Source

2021.12.06 01:50 TranslatorHaunting15 Who is AEW for?
As in who is their target audience? I keep trying to get into it but I just can’t. It feels too much like they try to treat it like a real sport and put so much emphasis on wrestling. The people everybody gets so excited for like Omega, Cole, Ruby Soho, Punk, I just can’t really get the appeal of them. I grew up with Punk during his rivalry with Jeff Hardy and all that Nexus and Straightedge Society stuff, but was never really a big fan of his.
I like WWE because I like the theatrical and drama aspect of wrestling. I like the stories, feuds, the characters and just look at the matches as part of all that. I never really look at wrestling like it should be presented as a real sport because as we all know, wins and losses are scripted and it’s not genuine athletic competition like other professional sports are.
I guess I’m more probably considered a casual fan. But if I’m not even the kind of viewer that AEW is looking to appeal to then it’s all good. Just doesn’t seem like wrestling you would just run into from flipping channels and you would be interested in it, or stuff you can show someone who has never seen wrestling before and they would get into it. A lot of the stuff they say, I feel like only wrestling fans would get it. Like watching MJF and CM Punk’s promo, there’s a lot of references to WWE and CM Punk’s past that the average person who doesn’t follow wrestling wouldn’t get.
I don’t know but can someone fill me in or am I the only one who thinks this? AEW feels too much like amateurish backyard indie wrestling in my opinion and doesn’t have the same feel that WWE or even TNA back in the day had.

2021.12.06 01:50 Sw33t_H0ney Inbox icon shows I have likes but they aren’t showing up on activity page
So I made some comments on a video and I believe I was blocked by op because even though I still get like and comment notifications it doesn’t show up on my list of recent activity and op’s account doesn’t come up when I search them. How do I stop receiving notifications for a comment? It’s a bit annoying seeing that people have liked or commented but being unable to actually see it.

2021.12.06 01:50 XboxMxMB1ue Find a New Route of Playing
I've been seeing so many posts of people complaining about the shotguns, and I feel like explaining why I think this has happened.
The shotgun meta has been the meta since the beginning of Fortnite: Battle Royale, and has been like that for 4 years. 4 YEARS. That is a VERY long time, and I feel like Epic wants us to play a different way, craft your own route, be your own player. Now of course, there will probably be a shotgun buff, but mark my words, this season will get very boring if that buff happens.
So, please, find a new way of playing, and stop following what you have known for a long amount of time.
